A bill that would ban child marriage in England and Wales will be presented to parliament for its second reading this week.

Marriage and civil partnerships are currently legal at 16 and 17 with parental consent.

The bill will be presented by Conservative MP Pauline Latham which aims to protect those who are forced into marriage. Last year, around a quarter of cases dealt with by the UK’s forced marriage unit were of children under 18.

However, campaigners want measures to go further and to criminalise non0registerd marriages which are said to make up the majority of child marriages.
