More than 180,000 children are raised in the Uk by kinship carers. These can be grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles or, family friends.

More children are raised by kinship carers than are in the care system or adopted but the financial support provided is limited.

Many do not have access to free legal advice which provides challenges for prospective special guardians and can limit the support they need in caring for the child.
