First Advice, Part Representation & Full Representation

Some types of case, such as conveyancing, divorce and the preparation of wills are usually undertaken on a fixed-fee basis.  If we offer you a fixed fee then we’ll tell you up front what you’ll be charged.  You’ll be charged that fixed fee no matter how much work we have to undertake on your behalf.

If you’d like a quote for fixed fee conveyancing work then please get in touch with our Conveyancing department who will happy to help you.

Other types of work are undertaken on an hourly rate basis.  You’ll be told the hourly rate charged by the people (we call them ‘fee-earners’) undertaking work on your behalf.  The fee-earners will record the time that they spend working on your behalf and you’ll be sent a bill each month for that time.

If you have a family case then we offer a number of additional ways of paying for your case.

First Advice

For those who wish to make an appointment to seek initial advice to understand the legal position in which they may be placed we offer a fixed fee service called First Advice.  The cost of First Advice is £234 including VAT and the cost covers a face-to-face, video or telephone interview as you prefer and the advice is confirmed to you in writing.

Part Representation

Beyond First Advice we offer Part Representation where you represent yourself but come to see us as often as you wish and pay for the advice per visit in the sum of £234 including VAT.  During the time of your visit, for which one hour is allocated, we do all that we can to help you in that time and then you represent yourself equipped with the advice which we give you until you return for further Part Representation advice at another appointment.

Full Representation

Full Representation is the traditional way in which clients instruct solicitors.  We assume responsibility for the management and conduct of your case, you pay us for the work which we do which includes the time we spend with you but it also includes the time that is spent working for you that you do not see including drafting documents, preparing letters and emails, engaged on telephone with you and with others and that work is time costed and you receive a bill of costs at the end of each month which is payable when you receive it.  At commencement of working for you under Full Representation we ask for a deposit in the sum of £500 and that deposit is offset against your final bill of costs at the end of the case.

We can offer fixed fees for identified pieces of work.  The fees are agreed and paid in advance.  We agree to undertake the work necessary to fulfil the stage identified within the agreement and you have the guarantee that the costs will not rise beyond the fixed fee that you pay for that stage.

The relationship between a client and their solicitor must be based on trust.  We want to be honest and clear with you from the very start about what we will charge you for the work that we will undertake on your behalf.  Where you agree a fixed fee service those fees will be agreed with you in advance.  Where you agree an hourly rate service we will make sure you know what those hourly rates are.  We will always try to give you an estimate of our fees to end of the next foreseeable stage in your case and keep you updated throughout your case as that estimate changes.

Since your case is unique it isn’t always possible to say in advance how much your case will cost you but you can view the typical cost of some types of cases on our price transparency page.

If you initially choose one service but later decide that you like to change to a different service then all you have to do is tell us in writing that you would like to do that.
