Colin Pitchfork, a convicted murderer and rapist of two children in the 1980’s could be free to leave prison after the Parole Board ruled that he could be be released on licence. His behaviour in prison has been described as  “positive and had included extensive efforts to help others”.

Pitchfork was one of the first person to be convicted of murder on the basis of DNA evidence after police took mass DNA samples in the surrounding area of the two murder sites.

Robert Buckland, the Justice Secretary stated he was ‘taking advice’ on the matter but officially has 21 days to ask the Parole Board to reconsider their position. Buckland also stated that irrespective of the Strickland case he wanted a formal review of the Parole Board.
